I like crescendos. I guess it's the build up that does it, right? That is its purpose. The lead-in groove, the prelude...queue areas - all designed for the same function: build anticipation. Take our first song, a remix by Electric Fitness. The opening 'tinman heartbeat' swells until ultimately it gives way to a more playful melody of childlike clanging. It's the clamber that evokes our well-wishing Nostradmus - What could be over that peak? What landscapes await?
Either way, it's a nice effect for a sleepy sunday.

I confess I watch a good amount of useless Reality Tv. But it’s that odd niche of Reality programming that exists between the Cooking Channel & the History Channel. I am talking about ‘Swamp People’, ‘Storage Wars’, ‘American Pickers’ and so on. I like to think of this as the ‘Main Street’ Reality Tv, while the extravagant lifestyles of The ‘Real’ Housewives & Kardashians’ are reserved under the ominous eponym – ‘Wall Street’ Reality Tv.
And I do believe the "Main Street vs Wall Street" dichotomy exists even in Tv programming. But what does it say when I watch Swamp People with an air of romanticism? No, I don’t imagine killing a ‘gator to be neither: A- something I’d be particularly adept at; nor B – a singular, artful act of hunting. However sprinting down the rivers of Louisiana, carving out the paths of the once-was is enough for me.

Sleepy Sundaze: Issue #3
Today's issue features music by the oh-so-good Macabees doing what they do best: chilled-to-the-bone dreampop. We are also featuring the new single from Walk off the Earth, along with two wildly different elctro-pop songs. Pallers falls more in line with bands like the heavenly The Sounds of Arrows, while Givers land betwixt Dirty Projectors & 'Merriweather Post Pavilion'. Both are addictive.
However just like last week we'd like to highlight another band who has submitted their music. "Whistle Peak, from Louisville, Ky., is pop music in disguise and experimentation at its core. It is music that takes you on a journey of the imagination, inhabiting fantastical lands while drawing from life experience. It is the particular phrased in the universal. It is children's stories told by grown men. The music is upbeat and hypnotic, pulling you closer with each listen and surprising you with small amulets layered beneath continuous melody. Whistle Peak’s style combines folk and electronic music, blending synthetic and acoustic instrumentation with songs of love and loss, joy and darkness. Not to say these boys are downers, rather their songs are quite optimistic and redemptive, bringing a small smile to man, woman and child alike. Chill out, strap on some ear muffs and enter a world where nature rules and men and women are entranced in dream-filled slumber."
That sounds about right.

Nomadic Firs - Vines from Crash Symbols on Vimeo.
Today we are going to do things a bit differently. Its natural really. There comes a time when the old just doesn't cut the fat anymore and so things get changed up. See over the past few months Pants Dance has been growing; and with this growing audience, we happily opened our doors to more music submissions. Of course we have gotten the inevitable "I'm-a-misunderstood-industrial-drone-musician-who-just-yearns-to-be-recognized-for-the-genius-that-Trent-Rezor-Is" submission, and boy-o those are interesting. Yet much of the music we are sent is enjoyable - even if it doesn't fit into our PantsDance world.
Sometimes though we get a submission that is simply spot on. Take for example Nomadic Firs. We first posted them on November 13th with the Occupy-inspired "I'm A 99". Its a velvet merry-go-round that could have easily fallen into a niche cliche (much like that) - but it doesn't. Its cyclical nature - loop over loop, chant over chant - draws you in, tightly wrapping you in the heart of this socio-politico movement. If you haven't listened to it yet - stop being a jerk and check it out!
'Vines' continues the Baby Dayliner (a personal favorite) style of quirky-yet-addictive electronic, over hip-hop drums. And that voice - that midas voice is like butter melting on a warm homemade biscuit. Simply Amazing. So much so that we decided to post the video (a first!) along with our usual mini-mix. Please take a moment out of your sleepy daze to watch the infallibly cute video directed by Jacob Boyd - and don't forget to download the Sundaze mini-mix.
As always - Enjoy!
